Abstract

This study examined the effects of NPK 15:15:15 fertilizer on the growth and root yield of Touchon and Nantes carrot varieties during the 2024 cropping season in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria. The study tested fertilizer rates of 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1 using a 2x4 factorial design in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates. Plant height, number of leaves per plant, total leaf area, stem girth, root length, root weight per plant, and root yield were among the measurements. Fertilizer had a significant impact on vegetative growth, according to data analysis using ANOVA and LSD (5% significance). While 200 kg ha-1 produced the largest total leaf area and stem girth, carrots receiving 300 kg ha-1 NPK had the tallest plants and the most leaves. Nantes outperformed Touchon in terms of height, leaf area, and stem girth, but variety had no discernible effect on vegetative growth. Root yield was significantly impacted by fertilizer application, which peaked at 200 kg ha-1 before falling. Compared to Touchon, Nantes consistently produced heavier and longer roots. Nantes with 200 kg ha-1 NPK produced the highest root yield of 15.18 t/ha, greatly surpassing the control and other treatments. For the best carrot production in this area, 200 kg ha-1 of NPK 15:15:15 fertilizer is advised.
